The idea I have chosen to take forward is Conformity and from deciding on this, I began researching into conformity to enable me to gain a deeper understanding of its definition and the different types of conformity that exist.
From my research, I found that informational conformity can be seen within the short story which is defined as: - This usually occurs when a person lacks knowledge and looks to the group for guidance.
- Or when a person is in an ambiguous situation and socially compares their behaviour with the group.
- This type of conformity usually involves internalisation- where a person accepts the views of the group and adopts them as an individual.
Conformity to me can be simply defined as being influenced by external factors which then as a result, causes an individual to follow the majority.
Relating to the different types of Social Conformity, i feel that informational conformity is evidenced within the story concerning the Emperor as he lacks the intuition and the self knowledge to realise that there is no such cloth in the world that cannot be seen by those branded as 'stupid' and by sending his associates to see the cloth before him, he is evidencing his reliance on the group for guidance. He then accepts the views of the group and pretends to see the cloth which does not exist therefore falling under the category of informational conformity.
"They want to do the right thing but may lack the appropriate information. Observing others can provide this information. This is known as informational conformity."
Next steps:
I now want to look at artists who also look into conformity and how they have this interpreted this important issue to help with inspiration and also more knowledge on the many ways this can be translated through an artwork.
